WordPress 2.6.1 Can’t Login After Upgrade

WordPress2.6.1 Upgrade

Just a quick note to those who may be having issues after you update to the latest version of WordPress (WP 2.6.1). I recently upgrade from WordPress 2.6 to 2.6.1 and when I did, I could no longer login to my blog. It kept telling me to “Please Login Again”. I even tried to reset the password, with no success. I tried searching the internet and finally found someone who recommended deleting your cookies. It worked!

That’s all I have for now, I just wanted to post so I could help the others that were having the same issues who could not find the answers without searching through 100′s of comments.

If you are like me and like to play on your computer a lot, you are going to want to take advantage of this new ‘Mass Installer Plugin’ for Firefox. It allows you to create a list of all the plugins installed for Firefox and install them in one swoop. This comes in very handy if you like to test multiple browsers or like to have your Firefox setup a certain way. With this plugin you can manage you extensions and backups easily.

Yahoo Beta Mail/RSS Now with AJAX

I had seen the rumors for a while now floating around that Yahoo! was going to introduce a new mail client with RSS capabilities, but I guess I overlooked that it was also going to be an AJAX based application. For what its worth, here is my opinion.

It’s buggy. It locked up my browser (Firefox 1.5 / Mac OS X) while just clicking on a few links and the operation is a bit clunky and slow. But that is all the bad I have to talk about for the time being. I have only really played with it for a short time but seem some cool potential with it. It operates much like a desktop application should with dragging and dropping of a message (or messages) into folders. I was also able to browse and delete my mail with the arrow and delete keys. The browser auto checks for new mail so no need to refresh, it will just show new mail as it arrives. I guess I should also mention that you can open multiple emails (in tabbed browsing format) and click between them and a new message compostion window if you need to see multiple emails. The right click while in the Yahoo! Mail Beta also functions as it would in a desktop application with such features as ‘reply to sender, reply to all, mark as spam, etc’.

Another cool addition, as you can see from the screenshots, is that of RSS integration. It seems to have pulled in my ‘My Yahoo!’ subscriptions for display inside of the mail application. While there doesn’t seem to be any special support for podcasting (it just reads the RSS feed as a normal news feed) I did have a lot of trouble subscribing to Podcast RSS feeds. It kept telling me the feeds were invalid (mostly with feeds linked to a WordPress Blog).

So my final opinion: It still needs a lot of love. They are on there way to making it cool, but the hang and drag time frightened me a bit. One thing I just can’t stand is being afraid I am going to lose data…and when I hit a link or go to a new page in the Yahoo Mail Beta I feel like it could crash at any second and I would lose whatever i was doing at that point.

Songbird to Launch Tonight : TechCrunch

I am eagerly anticipating the Mac version of this one. It could have a dramatic effect on the podcasting landscape if people could have the ability to create and share playlists of podcasts and podsafe music through podcasting sites. Follow link for screen shots.

Songbird, the eagerly anticipated new media browser and web player built on the Mozilla (Firefox) engine, will launch (for Windows) later tonight or this morning. Mac and linux will come later.

Since songbird is a web browser in addition to a media player, user will be able to browse web sites. If audio files are embedded in the site, they will be displayed separately and can be played, downloaded, included in playlists, etc.

Because Songbird is built on the Mozilla platform it will be fully extensible by third parties with minimal developer skills – XML, CSS and Javascript. Extensions will work across all platforms – windows, mac and linux. Songbird is also open source and developers may modify the source code.

Dual boot Windows XP, Mac OS on a ThinkPad

The rumors may finally be coming to truth, and the first tests of mac VS windows will soon be under way now that people have the new OS X running on a Windows machine. Let the fun begin! (click through to site to see a screenshot of OS X on IBM Thinkpad).

I got the chance to play with an IBM ThinkPad that dual boots Windows XP and Mac OS 10.4 (the Ã¢â‚¬Å“IntelleseÃ¢â‚¬Â version). It felt like I was in the twilight zone seeing the shiny Mac interface on a black IBM laptop…

Narrowing Your Search by Giving : Apple.com

I never used to like Spotlight on the Mac (tiger) but as I learn more about it, it gets better and better. Read the tip below from the Apple website and try the following searches I have tested and found to work in Spotlight:

If you want to narrow your search right off the bat, you can add a category when you type the term in the Search field. For example, if youÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re looking for a song named Ã¢â‚¬Å“VertigoÃ¢â‚¬Â (by the band U2), thereÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s no sense in having Spotlight bring you a list of email messages from your ear doctor, right? So if you give Spotlight a hint as to what youÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re looking for, you can get just songs as your Spotlight search results. HereÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s how: Type Ã¢â‚¬Å“kind:musicÃ¢â‚¬Â (with no space in between or quotations), then add one space and type Ã¢â‚¬Å“VertigoÃ¢â‚¬Â (again, you donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t need the quotes). So your search will look like this: kind:music Vertigo. Now it will only search songs, and youÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ll only get song results. Schweet!

Moving to a New Server

The web hosting world drives me crazy. It has been part of my businesses since I started in college and it has never been easy for me. Fortunately I have always had people smarter than myself to manage them for me (tim, dave & others). However, the time has come to make my life a little bit easier. I decided to buy another server and move all my personal sites (and a few other small sites) over to it with a managed domain, name server, email package, etc…all in one. I will lose some of the flexibility I have become accustomed to, but it will be worth it to not have to bother anyone to help me fix it.

So, why am I blogging about this? Well, because this may effect you. I spent the whole day today (well, yesterday now) setting up the server and moving about 10 domains over to it to test. One of them could have been yours, and hopefully you didn’t even notice because 95% of the process was entirely to easy. It’s amazing how much changes when you get stuck in an old system that just works. I’m glad I moved.

Mac OS X Tips: Changing Any Icon

Ok, so I am new to the Macintosh (a little over a year now I think) but I always wondered how to change all of the icons on my computer easily without installing any third party applications. Turns out…its quite simple. All you have to do is the following:

Pick the image/icon you would like to use and hit Apple+I
Click on the little picture (in example, the cinema display)
Hit Apple+C to copy the icon and close the window
Pick the folder, drive or hardware device you would like to change the icon of and hit Apple+I on that
Click on the little picture again and hit Apple+V to paste the new icon
Close the open window, and enjoy your hard work!

As you can see in the image, I enjoyed my hardwork too much…I changed all of my icons for the folders I use most often. Most of the icons I got from the IconFactory Website in their free icon section.

Found this cool website awhile back, but it lets you spell words and it uses flickr.com to write it on the screen. You just type the word into the box, hit the spell button, and it picks images for you! Check it out!!

MySpace.com Errors

All this time I thought it was just the PodcastAlley.com Website that went down for no reason. Turns out, MySpace.com has the same problem! I very rarely go to that website, but like to visit it from time to time to see if anything has changed. 99% of the time, the answer is no. I keep hoping that something new or cool will show up on the site that may convince me that I need to sign up and play. But back to the point. It was just kinda funny to see the error on the site when i tried to visit (click the image to see if full size).

I started using this on the PodcastAlley.com blog awhile back but decided to start tagging my own blog now as well. If you are interested in an easy solution to add tags with links to technorati as well, thien I suggest this plugin. If anyone knows of something better, please let me know.

The tags are stored in a Custom Field, so this plugin does not require any modifications of the database structure. The plugin adds a text input for that custom field in the appropriate admin pages.

Flickr Upload Tool

Ok, this one is not that new, and it is not that revolutionary, but it does make my life easier. In Mac OS 10.3 and higher, this app runs on your computer. It allows you to drag and drop images from your desktop or iPhoto alike. On import, it will ask you if you would like to resize the images, batch convert them, add names descriptions and tags and after you are done uploading…it will even tell you how much bandwidth you have used (in accordance with your limit) for the month.

Get it (and others for PC and MAC) at the Flickr Website. It saves you tons of time from manually uploading the images through the browser upload tool.
